Educating the Incarcerated
BSCTC recognizes the importance of changing community narratives surrounding incarcerated individuals. Nationally, BIPOC individuals are over-represented in corrections facilities even when they are underrepresented in their local communities.
Given that 95% of the incarcerated population rejoin society, BSCTC is invested in bettering the educational opportunities for all students. Choice-filled futures mitigate the economic disadvantages and racial inequalities that perpetuate recidivism, or returns to correctional facilities. By offering programs at local jails and USP Big Sandy, BSCTC is helping lower recidivism by 20% for those that earn their GEDs and 40% for those that earn a college degree. We hope to expand our program offerings to more correctional sites soon.
