JOIN OUR MILITARY-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

Knowing where to start with your VA Educational Benefits can be challenging. Our Veterans Services Coordinators, located within the offices of Student Affairs on the Prestonsburg and Pikeville Campuses, serve the student veteran population by assisting with application for VA Educational Benefits (under Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, and 1606), navigating the college admissions process, academic advising, and serving as advocates for veteran issues across the Big Sandy Community and Technical College campuses.

All program offerings, whether you choose to obtain a certificate, diploma, or degree, are eligible for VA Educational Benefits under all chapters in accordance with the Southern Association of Colleges (SACS) and the state Approving Agency for Veterans Education. To view our program offerings, please access the Veterans Educational web site at www.vba.va.gov and go to our Program Finder.

Credit for Military Training

BSCTC will award credit to veterans for Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) based upon the recommendations by the American Council on Education (ACE) for lower level college equivalency. Students should request an official copy of their Joint Services Transcript (JST). Air Force veterans and service members should request their transcript from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF).

How to Apply

The application process is quick and simple, and we’re here to help. Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Submit your application for admission
    • If you are on active duty, a drilling reservist, or a member of the National Guard you may qualify for Federal or State Tuition Assistance (TA). Visit Veterans Services for further information.
    • Submit the KCTCS application if you’re not using TA.
  2. File for your GI Bill® Benefits

Visit the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to learn about the various GI Bill® Programs and which are best for you. Find out if you're eligible and how to apply.

  3. Send your transcripts from high school and any colleges you’ve attended.

  4. Submit your ACT or SAT scores or the results of placement testing

  5. Explore financial aid. Federal financial aid is available for members of all branches of the military. We also offer scholarships, grants and loans to make a great education even more affordable.

Concurrent Admission

If you’re planning to enlist in the Army, you may be eligible for the Concurrent Admissions Program (ConAP), a program designed to help you apply to college and access your benefits. Be sure to select KCTCS as your home college when you enlist.

Policy on Students Called to Active Duty

In support of active service members, Big Sandy Community & Technical College follows the KCTCS policy, which allows maximum flexibility in assisting these students.
