WILLIAM G. DUKE GOLF SCRAMBLE SET FOR MAY 14The Big Sandy College Educational Foundation, Inc. will host the William G. Duke Golf Scramble, presented by Appalachian Wireless, on Thursday, May 14 at StoneCrest golf course in Prestonsburg.
This years scramble will benefit the William G. Duke Endowment. Created in 2013, the endowment awards scholarships annually to students in the Honors Program at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC). The Honors Program was created in 2005 to provide academically gifted students the opportunity to reach their potential. Students in the program participate in a variety of community service projects, while stressing the importance of open-mindedness, individuality, creativity and free thinking.
The William G. Duke Endowment pays tribute to a man that valued education and its value in lifting people out of poverty, said Dr. Charles V. Chrestman, interim president/CEO of BSCTC. The money raised through the golf scramble will help ensure that students have the opportunity to pursue a quality college education and achieve their dreams.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with tee-off set for 9 a.m. The scramble will be a four-person format. Entry fee is $400 per team and includes breakfast, lunch and refreshments. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place teams, hole-in-one, longest drive and closest to the pin. There will also be an assortment of door prizes.
This years corporate sponsors include: AEP/Kentucky Power, the Kentucky Coal Academy and Booth Energy.
The scramble honors the life and legacy of William G. (Bill) Duke, who served as special projects coordinator at BSCTC from 2004 until the time of his death on November 12, 2012. Duke was a pioneer in education and a visionary in workforce development. He started his career teaching in a one-room school in Johnson County in 1962. From 1972-2001, he worked as director of the Carl D. Perkins Rehabilitation Center.
