    STUDENTS GO BACK IN TIME AT BSCTCS APPALACHIAN DAYS

    Students from Betsy Layne and W.R. Castle elementary schools talked with a Civil War soldier who demonstrated the different types of bugle sounds used during battle during Appalachian Days on Friday, April 29 at Big Sandy Community and Technical Colleges Prestonsburg campus. Students from Betsy Layne and W. R. Castle elementary schools spent the day learning about the past during the fifth-annual Appalachian Days held at Big Sandy Community and Technical Colleges Prestonsburg campus on Friday, April 29.

    Students were treated to a laser show and exhibit at the East Kentucky Science Center and Varia Planetarium and then traveled back in time as they toured the historic Samuel May house, watched a civil war re-enactment and spent time at a Civil War encampment.

    Appalachian Days was a concept first derived by the Presidents Diversity Advisory Council to help students understand and be proud of their heritage in the area, said Tina Terry, director of cultural diversity at BSCTC. Our students live in an area that is so rich with history. What better way than to spend a day fully immersed in history.

    During their tours, students listened to a presentation by the maiden of the Samuel May House. They also had the chance to speak to soldiers at the civil war encampment.
