PTK MEMBERS ATTEND REGIONAL CONVENTION

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) members from Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) recently traveled to Georgetown, Ky. for the organizations regional conference.

The highlight of the weekend was a tour of the Toyota Motor facility, as PTK members learned how it has become a leading international automaker.

The tour related directly towards our Honors topic of the culture of competition, said Marsha McKenzie, Phi Theta Kappa advisor at BSCTC.

The tour followed the entire production of a vehicle, from rough steel bolts, through metal stamping, part construction, painting and test driving. Toyota produces 2,000 cars each day roughly one vehicle every 52 seconds.

On Friday, October 18, participants heard a presentation from Dan Bailey. A professor at Ashland Community and Technical College, Bailey talked about his father, Lowell, a Johnson County native in a presentation entitled, Closing the Circle: Tracing the Footsteps of My Father During World War II, for which we won the coveted Mosal award from PTK.

Dan used money from the award to trace his fathers footsteps through the Pacific Islands and document his impressions of the native people.

The conference concluded on Saturday, October 19, with roundtable discussions with PTK members from across the state on ideas for this years Honors project.
