MASONRY STUDENTS FINISH CLOCK TOWER CONSTRUCTION ON PRESTONSBURG CAMPUS

A group of Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) students got hands-on training constructing a timeless treasure for the college.

Last week, students and the colleges maintenance and operations staff put the finishing touches on a clock tower, providing a welcomed addition to campus for students, employees and visitors. The 22-foot tower, constructed of block and brick laid by the colleges masonry program, is located between the Student Center and Post-Secondary Education building on BSCTCs Prestonsburg campus.

Students were glad to get hands-on experience constructing something that will benefit the college for decades to come.

Its like working a regular construction job, said James Baldwin, a student in the masonry program. We had a lot of fun doing this construction and more fun knowing itll be here for the community to see.

Benches and landscaping were recently placed around the tower. Randy Haney, who oversees the masonry program on the Mayo campus of BSCTC, worked closely with students and members of the college maintenance and operations team during construction.

Randy has done a great job making this class engaging, said Gaige May, a masonry student working on the project. Hes really approachable and helps us improve each day.

Haney said its rewarding to watch students work on projects that benefit the college.

They are very proud of their work, and they should be, he said. I cant help but think about when their children attend college here and see this tower. This tower means so much to our college, but also means a lot to the students who helped construct this.
