Industrial Maintenance Technology Program at BSCTC

at BSCTC. Big Sandy offers the IMT Program on its Pikeville and Mayo Campuses.
The BSCTC IMT Program trains students to maintain equipment, buildings and industry structures. Graduates are proficient in a variety of areas that require maintenance of equipment and structures that meet industry standards.
The Industrial Maintenance Technology Program is not new at Big Sandy CTC. It has been offered on the BSCTC Pikeville Campus for eleven years. However, with increasing enrollment numbers, Big Sandy CTC has expanded the Program to its Mayo Campus.
Instructors, Charles K. Moore and Stephen Music lead the IMT Program at Big Sandy CTC.
Associate Professor Charles K. Moore remarks, The Industrial Maintenance Technology Program is focused on training young men and women to be multi-crafted technicians with the ability to maintain and repair industrial machines. These machines are in a variety of industries such as the mining industry, manufacturing, large buildings, hospitals, heavy equipment and office equipment, etc. Students study in the areas of machine tool, welding, basic electricity, industrial electrical motor controls, programmable logic controllers, hydraulics and pneumatics (fluid power), maintenance of industrial equipment, blueprint reading and safety.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that industrial machinery mechanics, machinery maintenance workers and millwrights held about 408,300 jobs in 2008. Of these, 45,200 jobs were held by millwrights with the largest concentration of workers in manufacturing and construction industries.
Industrial machinery mechanics held about 287,700 jobs in 2008, while machinery maintenance workers accounted for 75,400 jobs. Many of both types of workers were employed in the manufacturing sector in industries such as food processing and chemical, fabricated metal product, machinery and motor vehicle and parts manufacturing.
Prospective students must submit the following to be eligible for the IMT Program at BSCTC.
- Application for admission
- Sixteen years of age
- Act scores or equivalent
- Copy of high school transcript or GED certificate
- Verification of completion of prerequisite courses
- Official transcripts of all post-secondary course work or copy of midterm grades
