GSA Sponsored Events this November
The Gay-Straight Alliance would like to announce two of our upcoming events for the month of November.
First we are having an encore presentation of the Lifetime movie Prayers for Bobby
on Thursday Nov. 12 in the first floor Conference Room on the Pikeville campus at
5:15 p.m. If you missed it the first time we showed this movie, or if you just want
to see it again, please feel welcome to join us this time. More information available here.
Also, the GSA wants to announce our next colloquium. Dr. Bernadette Barton, a sociologist
from Morehead State University will be coming to the Prestonsburg campus on Wed. Nov.
18 at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Barton will be doing a presentation titled The Toxic Closet:
Being Gay in the Bible Belt. The presentation will examine, among other things, how
living in the Bible Belt forces many gay men and lesbians into the closet. This closeting
causes a variety of destructive psycho-social consequences including poor relationships
with families, compromised intimacy with others, feelings of isolation, low self-esteem,
and, most significantly, the perception of being a second-class citizen to heterosexuals.
