EKSC SELECTED TO HOST NATIONAL SCIENCE, ENGINEERING PROGRAMS

The East Kentucky Science Center (EKSC) has been selected by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net) to host NanoDays.

Located on the Prestonsburg campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC), the East Kentucky Science Center was one of three institutions in Kentucky to host the event. This will mark the third consecutive year the EKSC has hosted NanoDays events.

EKSC Director Steve Russo received training to conduct NanoDays activities while he worked at the Schenectady Museum and Suits-Bueche Planetarium in Schenectady, N.Y. The national celebration is set for March 29-April 5. The EKSC is currently finalizing activities and will announce activities in the coming weeks.

A community-based event, NanoDays features education programs about nonoscale science and engineering. The event is celebrated all across the United States and involves science museums, research centers and universities.

NanoDays celebrations bring university researchers together with science educators to create new and unique learning experiences for both children and adults to explore the miniscule world of atoms, molecules, and nanoscale forces. Most NanoDays events combine fun hands-on activities with presentations on current research. A range of exciting NanoDays programs demonstrate the special and unexpected properties found at the nanoscale, examine tools used by nanoscientists, showcase nano materials with spectacular promise, and invite discussion of technology and society.

NISE Net is a national community of researchers and informal science educators dedicated to fostering public awareness, engagement, and understanding of nanoscale science, engineering, and technology.
