EKSC HOSTS BUBBLE-OLOGY CAMP

Making the perfect bubble is an art.

Children at the East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium (EKSC) learned a lot about the science of bubbles on July 9 during a Bubble-ology camp.

The one-day event was open to children kindergarten through third grade and is part of an extensive outreach of programs offered by the EKSC this summer.

I love making big bubbles, said six-year-old Barrett Lemaster. I want to do this when I get home.

Heather Wheeler, an instructional specialist at the EKSC, said campers learned the science of bubbles and air.

They learned about the various gases in the air and the various weights of air, said Wheeler. The children are always so eager to learn and the bubbles make it especially fun for them.

Five-year-old Emily Bailey was especially excited about how camp staff helped her develop a bubble-making device from string and drinking straws.

I cant wait to do this at home, Bailey said, smiling.

Campers learned about dry ice and made a device from drinking bottles and socks to make a bubble snake.

We want students to understand that learning is fun, said Wheeler. I think we enjoy the camp as much as the children do.

The EKSC, which is located on the Prestonsburg campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College, has two camps left this summer a LEGO My Robot camp for children grades fourth through eighth (July 29) and a two-day Lost in Space camp (July 15-16) for children grades third through eighth.

The EKSC is open Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children and includes admission into the Energee exhibit, which features interactive energy concepts about coal, natural gas, kinetic energy, light and more, and laser shows.
