BSCTCS PHI THETA KAPPA ALPHA NU ZETA CHAPTER HOLDS INDUCTION CEREMONY

The Alpha Nu Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Big Sandy Community and Technical College held its induction ceremony Friday, March 28, in the Gearheart Auditorium on the Prestonsburg campus.

You represent the cream of the crop among community college students nationwide, BSCTC President/CEO Dr. George D. Edwards told inductees. This time of year is special for us because we are celebrating so many achievements, and it all culminates with our commencement in May.

Dr. Nancy B. Johnson, provost at BSCTC, said this time of year is one of her favorites because I can look at the students and say, Job well done.

Johnson encouraged students to look to the future but never forget the past.

You are not among the many but the few, she said. I challenge you to seek new ways to learn and grow.

Cindy Manning, associate professor of information technology and co-advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Nu Zeta chapter, highlighted some of the accomplishments of the group this academic year, including the Circle of Love program which provided gifts to 120 children across the region during the Christmas holiday.

Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Nu Zeta also participated in events such as Christmas in the Park with the Prestonsburg Womans Club and through its Honors in Action program provided tutoring to BSCTC students.

Kitty Miller, associate professor of information technology and co-advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Nu Zeta chapter, spoke of the groups recent distinction as a 5-Star chapter, the highest honor that can be bestowed to a group.

The chapter earned high marks during the Phi Theta Kappa regional convention in Henderson, Ky. on March 22.

In addition to the 5-Star recognition, the Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Nu Zeta chapter won the following awards: Michelle Waller, Distinguished Officer and Distinguished Officer Team; Victoria Hampton, Distinguished Officer Team; Matthew Roberts, Distinguished Officer Team; Aaron Hacker, Distinguished Officer and Distinguished Officer Team; and Hayley Slone, Distinguished Member. The group also brought home the College Project award and was second and third runner-up, respectively, in Honors in Action and Distinguished Chapter.

Cody Young, president of Phi Theta Kappas Kentucky region, attended the induction ceremony and officially welcomed students to the organization.
