    BSCTC WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS TO OFFER CLASS B CDL TRAINING

    Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) will offer a Class B CDL class from June 22 through July 6.     Operated through the colleges Workforce Solutions division on its Hager Hill campus, the class will run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    Class B CDL drivers can operate:

    • Any straight truck with two or more axles and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more;
    • Any vehicle with two or more axles and a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, pulling a vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less; or
    • A single vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) if the GVWR is 26,001 pounds or more.

    This includes, but is not limited to, buses, cement trucks and dump trucks.

    Kelli Hall, director of Workforce Solutions and the Kentucky Coal Academy, said jobs requiring this certification are in demand.

    Individuals with any CDL certification are in demand, and this is a great opportunity for someone wanting to advance in the workforce, a displaced worker or someone looking for a career change, she said.

    Dr. Devin Stephenson, president of Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC), said the creation of the Class B CDL class shows the colleges responsiveness to needs of business and industry.

    Our Workforce Solutions division remain engaged with business and industry leaders, as well as economic development officials to ensure Big Sandy Community and Technical College has the programs in place to make sure workers have industry-leading skills, he said. The common denominator in economic development is access to a highly-skilled and highly-trained workforce, and we are committed to playing that role in the Big Sandy region.

    Students participating must have a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical card and Class B instruction permit.
