BSCTC WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS, KY COAL ACADEMY ANNOUNCE INNOVATIVE FIBER, LINEMAN, OSHA AND CDL TRAINING PROGRAM

Big Sandy Community and Technical Colleges Workforce Solutions division and the Kentucky Coal Academy (KCA) have announced an innovative and accelerated training program that combines high-tech training for high-wage jobs.

The new program will provide students industry leading credentials in lineman, fiber optics, commercial drivers license (CDL) and OSHA. BSCTCs fiber optics training program was the first in Kentucky to offer an Outside Plant Cabling certification, in addition to other certifications as a technician, specialist in testing/maintenance and splicing specialist.

Dr. Devin Stephenson, president of BSCTC, said the accelerated pathway to multiple certifications will position our students at the front line of opportunities because of the quality of instruction and the reputation our college has in delivering highly-skilled students.

Last week, 10 men (nine of them laid off coal miners) traveled to Texas to train for a project installing Google fiber on the East Coast.

Companies are realizing what we have known all along: The work ethic and values of our people, coupled with world-class training, is desirable and profitable for companies, said Kelli Hall, dean of career education and workforce development. We are positioning our region for a transformation like we have never experienced, and were proud to be on the frontlines of this transformation.

The first training will take place in August on the colleges Hager Hill campus. For more information, contact Sally Porter at (606) 218-1276 or email sporter0044@kctcs.edu.
