BSCTC PROGRAMS HOST WINGS OF LOVE TO COMMEMORATE PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS AWARENESS

You are loved written on a baloon. The Respiratory Therapy and Human Services programs at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) held the second-ever Wings of Love ceremony on Thursday, October 15 to commemorate Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

In October 1988, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 3,952,841 births in 2012 and 23,985 infant deaths.

Those in attendance were able to light a candle in remembrance of a loved one and was able to write a personal message on a balloon prior to releasing it.

The memories of these children are with those who loved them and continue to love them each day, said Melissa Skeens, coordinator of the respiratory therapy program at BSCTC. This is a day of reflection, but our thoughts and prayers are with those who remember, reflect and mourn each day.

Susan Scott, of the East Kentucky Science Center and Varia Planetarium, performed a song during the ceremony.
