BSCTC PRESIDENT VISITS LEGISLATORS, PROMOTES COMMUNITY, WORKFORCE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Representative Chris Harris and Representative Hubert Collins talk with Big Sandy Community and Technical College President Dr. Devin Stephenson on the implications of budget cuts to higher education institutions during a meeting Tuesday, February 9 at the Capitol. Dr. Devin Stephenson, president of Big Sandy Community and Technical College, took the colleges passion for the possible message to legislators at the Kentucky State Capitol on February 8-9.

Within these hallowed walls, legislators and constitutional officers work to bring promise and possibilities to those who call this great Commonwealth home, said Dr. Stephenson. As the first choice of higher education in eastern Kentucky, we are working on the frontlines of community, workforce and economic development.

Since 2008, BSCTC has served more than 24,000 first-generation college students and has increased the number of degrees and credentials awarded by 156 percent.

Dr. Stephenson met with Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo, House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, Rep. Chris Harris, Rep. John Short, Rep. Hubert Collins, Senate Minority Floor Leader Ray S. Jones, Senate Minority Caucus Chair Johnny Ray Turner and Sen. Brandon Smith. He also met with Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

I was pleased with the meaningful dialogue we shared with legislators, said Dr. Stephenson. He and his wife, Judy, were recognized on the Senate floor by Sen. Jones and Sen. Turner and on the House floor by Speaker Stumbo. They understand the importance of higher education and how it plays a role in developing the workforce of today and tomorrow.

BSCTC, in conjunction with the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Floyd County Chamber of Commerce, and Paintsville/Johnson County Chamber of Commerce, will host a Showcase Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, March 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 111.
