BSCTC HOLDS FAFSA WORKSHOPS AT JOHNSON CENTRAL, SOUTH FLOYD HIGH SCHOOLS

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) held a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) workshop at Johnson Central and South Floyd high schools on Tuesday, January 5.

The FAFSA process can be overwhelming for students, parents and guardians, said Cathy Hurd-Crank, director of financial aid at BSCTC. These workshops are very helpful in navigating the process and understanding the financial aid process as it pertains to college.

There are misconceptions to the FAFSA process, said Crank. Students can apply for aid to up to 10 colleges or universities. BSCTCs FAFSA code is 001996.

It is also important to look at the cost of tuition and other expenses as it relates to your amount of aid, said Crank. Students also need to fully understand other forms of aid such as the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES), which is determined by your high school grade-point average and maintained by meeting academic objectives while in college.

BSCTC offers 30 programs and more than 200 credentials. As part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), the college was the only post-secondary institution in the state that did not raise its tuition during the 2015-16 academic year.

Tom Salyer, superintendent of Johnson County Schools, said the partnership between his district and BSCTC is one that truly benefits students.
