BSCTC DEDICATES LIBRARY IN MEMORY OF MELISSA M. FORSYTH

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) held a portrait unveiling and dedication of the Melissa M. Forsyth library on Thursday, September 18, on its Prestonsburg campus.

Forsyth devoted 23 years of service to Prestonsburg Community College and BSCTC. She spent nine years as Director of Library Services until her passing in 2013.

The dedication of this library and the unveiling of this portrait will serve as a constant reminder of our purpose to serve students and our community, said Dr. George D. Edwards, president and CEO of BSCTC.

Bill Forsyth, Melissas husband, said she was blessed to work with a great group of people over her 23 years at the college. He presented the library staff with a sample of her needlework to be displayed in their office area.

He ended his remarks reading a Jewish proverb: A true friend shows love all the time and is a companion during times of distress.

Dr. Nancy B. Johnson, provost at BSCTC, said Melissas dedication to her work was always evident.

She was capable of becoming very excited over the accomplishments of others, said Dr. Johnson. Melissa had a dramatic flair that captivated others, as did her infectious laugh which we all heard often.

Melissa believed libraries were the cornerstone of life-long learning, a place where history was preserved and a playground for the imagination.

Within these walls, but also throughout our college campuses and the communities we serve, her energy, her commitment, and her love for learning continues to live, said Dr. Johnson.

Dr. Doug Herman, a retired professor of History at BSCTC, read a poem written by Melissas friend and BSCTC retiree Gil Plants entitled Memories of Melissa.

An excerpt of the poem: This wonderful friend touched so many lives, As the morning dew touches the rose, And our hearts are overflowing with sadness, As her time with us comes to a close.
