Big Sandy Commuity and Technical College is proud to honor Stephanie Savvana Savi Kent as the newest member of the Super Sunday Hall of Fame.Super Sunday is an annual Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) statewide initiative intended to increase the college-going rate of students of color. As part of this initiative, a Super Sunday Hall of Fame has been established, highlighting outstanding African-American alumni.
Kent is a student at Big Sandy Community and Technical Colleges Pikeville campus. The Pikeville native will earn her Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees in Spring 2014 and is planning on attending the University of Kentucky to pursue a degree in radiology.
BCTCS has been a life changing experience for me, she said. Attending a community college has many advantages, such as smaller class sizes, the ability to get to know ones professors and affordability. Personally, I believe that the fact that I was able to get more of a one-on-one experience with my professors made me feel like I matter and that I am not just a number.
Kent, who currently works as a front desk clerk at the Hampton Inn in Pikeville, chose Big Sandy Community and Technical College because she was searching for an affordable option to a college education close to home.
I am thankful for the opportunity to have attended BSCTC, she said. I am looking forward to starting the next chapter of my education, which would have not been possible if not for Big Sandy Community and Technical College.
Big Sandy Community and Technical College will sponsor Super Sunday at Church of God MPG of T, 117 Redale Road, Pikeville, Ky., at noon on February 24. On this day, BSCTC and each of the other 15 KCTCS colleges and System Office will partner with churches in their communities to host information fairs for prospective college students and their families.
For most Kentuckians, higher education begins at one of the states 16 community and technical colleges. It is a vital part of the KCTCS mission to ensure the states diverse populations receive every opportunity to obtain a college education. KCTCSs Super Sunday is modeled after a highly successful program that California State University has hosted every year since 2005.
