AOKY TO HOLD ORIENTATION FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
The Accelerating Opportunity Kentucky (AOKY) program at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) has announced three prospective student orientations in December and January.BSCTC will hold sessions from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at its Mayo campus (Building A, Room 104) on the following dates: Tuesday, December 8; Thursday, December 17; and Wednesday, January 6.
In three years, more than half the jobs in Kentucky will require some college training. That means for Kentuckians without college experience, especially those that havent completed high school or earned their GED, the job market is bleak.
BSCTC offers pathways in the following areas: Allied Health, Automotive Technology, Construction Technology (Carpentry), Collision Repair, Electrical Technology, Surveying and Mapping and Visual Design.
AOKY allows students to quickly earn a credential while earning their GED, if necessary, that will put them on a path to a better paying job. Most programs are completed in one to two semesters. Students then can enter the workforce or continue working toward additional credentials or a degree.
Basic skills such as reading, writing and math are taught along with the chosen technical program with two instructors working together in the classroom. Students receive additional assistance in support labs with study skills, math, reading and writing. They also are assigned a success coach and career coach who help oversee all aspects of the educational process and help with job search activities and referrals.
