Dr. Sherry Zylka serves as the President and CEO of Big Sandy Community and Technical College. She began her lifelong career in community colleges as a student and has held numerous higher education leadership positions over the years. Dr. Zylka also worked at the American Association of Community Colleges in Washington, DC, and is currently a member of their commission for Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity. Most recently, she was provost of Wayne County Community College District in Detroit, Michigan. She has presented at local, national and international conferences and serves on numerous boards.
Dr. Zylka earned two associate degrees from Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan, and then transferred to the University of Michigan, where she received a bachelor’s of science degree. Dr. Zylka earned a master’s degree in education administration from Eastern Michigan University and most recently a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin specializing in higher education administration in their community college leadership program.
Dr. Zylka believes strongly in the vital role of community colleges to build community success; moreover, she is committed to the mission of community colleges as purveyors of workforce development and partnerships. Dr. Zylka emphasizes the transformational impact community colleges have for students, their families and their communities.
