Please join the Gay-Straight Alliance in the Student Center from
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday October 7 to watch videos of coming out stories. We will be observing this day on October 7 in lieu of the actual day (October 11) which occurs during Fall Break.
We will be showing YouTube videos of individuals personal coming out stories, but we would also like to include videos of any Big Sandy students who would feel comfortable telling their own story. If you would like to share your story with us, please contact April Santangelo at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The day was founded by Dr. Robert Eichberg and Jean OLeary in 1988, acting on behalf
of their organizations, The Experience and National Gay Rights Advocates, in celebration
of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights one year earlier,
in which 500,000 people marched on Washington, DC, for gay and lesbian equality. National
Coming Out Day events are aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community among the
general population in an effort to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement.
National Coming Out Day is recognized by the Human Right Campaign, Americas largest LGBT advocacy group.
