Sputum Bowl Winners

Paintsville (October 14) A group of students in the Respiratory Therapy program at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) made history last month when they won the schools first-ever Sputum Bowl championship.

Sputum Bowl is a national respiratory care quiz bowl competition held during each state convention. Winners from each state convene at the National Congress to compete for the national title.

Members of the winning team were Amber Hall, Trevor Robinson, Jordan Witten and Tracy Spence (alternate).

The group of students will participate in national Sputum Bowl at the National Congress on November 16-19 in Anaheim, Calif.

Its just an awesome feeling, said Hall. To think that we get to represent our state in a national competition is amazing.

Missy Skeens, who is program coordinator of the Respiratory Therapy program at BSCTC, said she is extremely proud of her students.

Our students amaze me with their willingness to learn and grow in their desired fields of study, she said. The national competition will not only enhance their skills but also let them know that they are as good as students from anywhere.

BSCTC had two teams in the state competition. That team, comprised of Brittney Maines, Katlyn Howard and Daniel Thacker, will also be making the trip to California.

For some members of the group, the trip will be their first time on a plane.

Im not nervous at all, said Howard. I am very excited about it.
