Published on Oct 20, 2017

Robert Lopez is your typical college student preparing himself for a career in criminal justice at Big Sandy Community & Technical College (BSCTC).

Originally from Pittsburg, PA.  Lopez, as he is known to all his friends, enrolled at the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center to help him prepare for college. Lopez enrolled at BSCTC in December 2015 and was very shy.  Lopez currently serves as the president of MSO, a Multicultural group at the college which encourages inclusion and togetherness, and with the continued encouragement decided to take on another role.

“Ms. Tina {Tina Terry, student activities & retention} encouraged me to get out of my shell.”  “After seeing my leadership skills during a parking event that the Multicultural Student Organization (MSO) worked. “She encouraged me to take a more active role at the college.” Said Lopez

Lopez ran and was elected in the fall of 2017 to serve as Student Government Association (SGA) president, he still continues his role as MSO president.  He hopes to get all campus clubs more involved with campus activities and will graduate from BSCTC in May of 2018.

“Students like Lopez are why I enjoy what I do.  He has come out of his shell and has grown so much, I look forward to seeing how he does in all his future endeavors” Said Tina Terry.

Lopez plans to go to into the U.S. Army and finish his Bachelor’s degree and work as a police officer or corrections.
