Tonya Shepherd, a second-year nursing student at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC), has been named the Eastern Regional Director of the Kentucky Association of Nursing Students (KANS).
The eastern region includes Ashland Community and Technical College, Big Sandy Community and Technical College, Eastern Kentucky University, Hazard Community and Technical College, Lincoln Memorial University, Morehead State University, National College, Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College and the University of Pikeville.
In her new role, Shepherd will attend monthly board meetings and will play a role in coordinating KANS’ annual conference. Additionally, she will visit other institutions in the eastern region to promote the work of KANS.
“I have always strived to be a leader,” said Shepherd, a 2003 graduate of Johnson Central High School. “My goal is to be an amazing nurse and to make a positive difference in my work in the field and in the community.”
This summer, Shepherd was selected for an externship with Kentucky One Health.
Dr. Patsy Jackson, coordinator of the associate degree nursing program at BSCTC, said Shepherd has provided solid leadership for the KANS program at the local level and this recognition validates her leadership skills.
“The faculty of our nursing program strive to not only teach nursing content, but to prepare our students for practice, but also to instill in them a strong sense of professionalism and confidence that nurses are leaders,” said Dr. Jackson. “We are very proud of Tonya and are confident she will represent Big Sandy Community and Technical College well in her new position.”
BSCTC is enrolling for its fall semester. Classes start August 14. For more information, visit bigsandy.kctcs.edu or call (606) 886-3863.
