Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) and the Big Sandy Singers and Band held a workshop for area high school students participating in the Big Sandy Idol Regional Competition on Saturday, February 4 on the Prestonsburg campus.
The all-day workshop covered proper stage etiquette and performing techniques. The Big Sandy Idol Regional Competition, presented by Gearheart Communications, will be March 10-11 at the Mountain Arts Center (MAC).
“For many of our participants, this will be the first time they have performed on stage with a live band in a venue like the MAC,” said Chesi Spriggs, assistant director of fine arts at BSCTC. “It is important for us to set the stage, eliminate any concerns they have and do everything to make sure they have a memorable experience during the competition.”
Members of the Big Sandy Singers and Band, many of whom participated in Big Sandy Idol Regional Competitions in years past, served as mentors to this year’s participants.
“I want them to know that this is an incredible experience they will never forget,” said Jerica Grim, a former Big Sandy Idol winner and member of the Big Sandy Singers and Band. “This program has truly changed my life.”
The Big Sandy Idol Regional Competition will feature first- and second-place winners from high schools in Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin, Martin and Pike counties as well as participants from a home- and private-school division. On Friday, March 10, second-place finishers will perform and one will be selected to return on Saturday, March 11 to compete with school winners for a full-paid scholarship to BSCTC, an album recording and a coveted spot with the Big Sand Singers and Band.
Tickets are $12 and $8 for groups of 10 or more. To purchase tickets, visit the MAC Box Office, log on to macarts.com or call 1-888-MAC-ARTS.
