Rebecca Nichole Ratliff
BSCTC 2009-2011

Rebecca Nichole Ratliff attended Big Sandy Community and Technical College from 2009 until her graduation in May 2011. With an Associate of Arts in hand, Rebecca enrolled at the University of Pikeville to continue her pursuit of a four-year degree. She graduated from UPike in 2013 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Communications.

When she graduated from high school, she wasnt sure if going away to school was the correct choice for her. BSCTC administration, faculty and staff are happy that Rebecca chose to remain in this area. According to Rebecca, Big Sandy provided me with the stepping stones necessary to further my education close to home. I was taught the skills required for a successful college education..good study habits, proper research techniques and the fundamentals of writing all of which also are required at a four-year university. Attending BSCTC made the transition from high school to college and beyond so much easier. Big Sandy allowed me to complete the core courses before enrolling at UPike where I could focus on the upper level courses needed for my degree.

When asked if BSCTC changed her, she said, I became more confident in my school work. However, math is required, and I am not known for my math skills. I was lucky, however, to have wonderful teachers who helped me through math. I learned from my two years at BSCTC that we can overcome even the hardest struggles if we really buckle down and try.and with a little help, you can really do anything you set your mind to do.

Rebecca developed leadership skills and a team attitude through involvement in college organizations including Phi Theta Kappa, Chi Omicron Mu, Pink Ladies, Bear Facts and UPike Bear TV. After graduating with a four-year degree, she still did not know what she wanted to do with her life. But, due to her internship with Pike TV and enrollment in a course where the students ran a news broadcast, she knew she wanted to do something involving the public and community leaders. This interest steered her toward WIFX Foxy 94.3 radio and this part-time job became a full time position upon graduation.
