At age 32, after many moves-to Japan, Florida, Georgetown, KY, and elsewhere-Bunyard was back home and ready to carve out a new path for her and her daughters, Brittney, 14, and Alyssa, 5.

"I just knew I needed to have good life. I wanted to take care of myself and my daughters and be independent," Bunyard said. She enrolled at Big Sandy Community and Technical College, majoring in Medical Information Technology/MIT Administration Option.

"It's a field that's thriving, and there's always going to be a need for medical jobs," she said, "and I really like the computer aspect that comes with a career in medical billing and coding."

As a working mother, Bunyard said she had to find a way to "balance everything" and chose to take only two-three classes each semester, along with several summer classes, all of which took place at BSCTC's Mayo Campus or online.

Currently, she works at a law office in Painstville. She will complete an internship in Fall 2013 and graduate in December. She looks forward to crossing the graduation stage and having her daughters and family members in the audience to share in the celebration. "I think it's important that [my daughters] are there and see what all the studying and sacrifice have been about," she added.

"I try to look at the positive. So many things daily will try to pull you down. You have to hold your head up and have faith in yourself. You have to have this before anyone else can have faith in you," she said.

Bunyard has been impressed with the program and instructors. "I've really appreciated the teacher interaction. Any time I've had a concern and emailed, I've received a pretty prompt return."

For the past few years, Bunyard has served as a work study student, as part of the college's Ready-to-Work program, which serves KTAP (Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program) recipients. To enroll in the program, students must receive KTAP and be enrolled at a KCTCS institution. They receive mentoring, counseling, referrals, case management, etc. "Basically, the program offers wrap-around services to help students overcome barriers while they are enrolled in college," said Cassandra Crum-Stratton, Ready-to-Work coordinator.

Bunyard said she was grateful to Crum-Stratton: "She has been a blessing and has really helped me so much . . . she has put me around good people. She's great."

This admiration is reciprocated. Crum-Stratton says of Bunyard: "She is an excellent work-study, student, mother . . . She has impeccable character and has experienced the highs and lows of life with a positive outlook."

Bunyard's life has wound through many places. At 18, after graduating from Johnson Central High School, she married and moved with her husband, who was in the military, to Japan where they lived for four years. There her daughter, Brittney, was born. For a young woman from eastern Kentucky, it was quite a culture change. "It was so different, but Japan was awesome. People there were happy and always very respectful," she said. "It was quite an experience."

Later, Bunyard moved back to Johnson County, before leaving again. She lived in Georgetown, KY, where she worked for several years at Wal-Mart. Then, for five years, she lived near Daytona, Florida. In 2009 Bunyard moved back to Johnson County.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. For Stephanie Bunyard, the road has led home, and she has remained steadfast and determined for nearly three years in her pursuit of the life she wants for her and her daughters, and her future career is within grasp.

Congratulations Spring 2013 Graduates

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) awarded degrees, diplomas or certificates to 309 graduates on May 11. In 2013, we celebrate 10 years of our existence as Big Sandy Community and Technical College, but we also celebrate the 50th year anniversary of Prestonsburg Community College and the 75th year anniversary of Mayo Technical College. In 2003, these two wonderful institutions were consolidated and we continue to experience tremendous student successes as Big Sandy Community and Technical College. We are proud of our history of educational progress and dedication to strengthening the region through education. The College continues to offer residents the opportunity to obtain a quality postsecondary education without leaving home. Thus, whether your interest lies in transferring to a four-year institution or immediate entry into the work place, Big Sandy Community and Technical College can meet your needs through transfer coursework, technical/career programs and workforce training programs.

The faculty and staff of Big Sandy Community and Technical College are dedicated to helping students succeed in accomplishing their objectives. Some classes may be available in a shortened time frame such as 4- or 8-week sessions.

Please look for the many activities and events that are being planned for us so we may celebrate in our 2013 Anniversary Year. We are gathering considerable information about our successful graduates, our current students, current and former community leaders and supporters, and our current and former employees. We plan to feature such information in our Anniversary Marketing effort. We invite your participation in these celebratory events and we hope to see you on one of our campuses in the near future.

For those who may be contemplating your future and the potential of higher education, I welcome you to our website, encourage your questions about our services/programs, and I invite you to contact one of our admissions advisors or counselors. The Caudill Players will perform The Adventures of Molly Whuppie: An Appalachian Adventure Tale by Anne Shelby on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 10:50AM in the Gearheart Auditorium on the Prestonsburg Campus.
These stories star Molly who is clever, brave and strong. Molly and her sisters Polly and Betts have adventures with Giants and Ogres, Witches and Queens, and through it all find happiness in their own backyard. This production includes original music written by Richard Bowers and Aaron McInturff and performed live by the cast.

The mission of the Caudill Players is to bring an educational theater experience to area schools as an arm of the ALC Admissions office. The plays are presented as community outreach from the college to organizations in the area. Dr. Don Caudill chose to honor his parents through an ongoing and endowed gift to ALC by way of sponsoring the Eagle Theater program, and specifically our theater touring troupe. The plays chosen are meant to highlight Appalachian culture, the rich heritage of William Shakespeare, and to explore significant and well known playwrights of the United States.

Has fear of the unknown kept you comfortably away from life changing opportunities?
In June of 2013, Big Sandy Community and Technical College Professor Matthew Smith will be leading students, community members, Big Sandy staff, and other faculty members to Amsterdam, Paris, and London.

The cost is around $3800 for students and $4000 for individuals over 30. This includes airfare, accommodations, most dinners, all breakfasts, access to all locations and sights, transportation through each country, and much more. Most people pay monthly, but some pay the total amount up front. There are several different ways to pay and a few of these options can be explored.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Mr. Urias grew up on the Fort Richardson Army base where his mom was stationed. After graduating from high school in 1997 he enrolled in Prestonsburg Community College but veered off of the educational path. He was encouraged by his wife of 10 years to return to school, complete his degree and be a role model for their nine year-old daughter.

Mr. Urias praises BSCTC faculty and staff for his wonderful postsecondary educational experience. He says they guided him in a direction he needed in order to succeed and accomplish his goals. "I had one instructor, Mr. Charles K. Moore, who went above and beyond and he is a cherished friend now. The Karate Club and Christian Student Union (C.S.U.) also helped me in so many ways to not just develop my mind, but also my body and soul."

Support from BSCTC gave Mr. Urias the confidence he needed to pursue a field outside his degree. He is now a Corrections Officer/Deputy Jailer for the Pike County Detention Center. Mr. Urias plans to pursue his lifelong ambition to earn an associate degree in criminal justice. He keeps a simple philosophy in mind for every situation... "It's like a recipe. You may like some ingredients better than others, but all ingredients are needed. This is proof the road of life will lead you down different paths, but with hard work everything will fall in place."

Healthy Living - Grief & Bereavement

In light of the recent school shootings of twenty 6 and 7-year-olds and their teachers and school administrators in Newtown, CT last December, I thought that this month’s topic might be helpful for the BSCTC community to consider.

Talking about death among adults is often awkward and a hard thing for many people to do. And, although death is a part of the human life cycle and is expected for people as they reach their golden years, we certainly do not expect it to happen to young people such as the ones it visited prematurely in Newtown, CT. When this type of horrific occurrence happens, many adults ask themselves “How could this tragedy have been prevented?” or “What more could I have done to help avoid this from happening?” As President Obama said in his condolence speech he delivered to the town of Newton on December 16th, 2013, “we can do better.”

Kail and Cavanaugh (2013) have suggested these steps that adults must go through when dealing directly with the death of a loved one:

Accept the loss. Some people have difficulty actually believing that a death has occurred and may take elaborate steps to deny the death. You cannot begin to heal from a death unless you first accept that it has occurred.

Experience the emotional turmoil accompanying the loss. Not everyone grieves that same way for the same person. Some people may be glad that a loved one is finally at peace while other family members may feel very sad and depressed over the loss.

Endure life without the lost loved one. Many people have difficulty continuing family traditions when a member of the family has died. They may not be able to sit at the dining room table for meals, staring at the chair that will never be filled by the deceased person again. While it may take up to 2 years or more for a person to fully grieve for a close family member, if the survivor is still acutely overwrought by their loss beyond this time, then it may be time for them to seek help from a professional grief counselor.

Loosen your ties with the deceased. Some people may find this the hardest step to take in recovering from the loss of a loved one. This may be because of the guilt that they may feel since they are still living while their loved one is not. In fact, most elderly people never remove their wedding rings when their spouses die and choose not to date or develop any new romantic relationships after the death of their spouse. This pattern becomes more problematic for younger widows or widowers because they usually have a lot longer lifespan to live without a significant other in their lives. It is important to note that loosening ties with the deceased does not mean forgetting about them and never thinking about them again. Instead, it means going on with your life and developing additional strong relationships with others and more fully engaging in life as you did prior to the death of your loved one.

Next, I want to focus on how we can better minister to our grieving children who may have seen some of the photos of the children who were killed in the school shooting or perhaps are suffering from news-overload about the story which continues to make headlines and top our local news stations.

There are a few things you should know about when dealing with children and the concept of death. First, it is important for adults talking with bereaved children to keep a positive demeanor and be reassuring to the child so that he/she knows that they are safe and protected at home and at school. This will help your child to develop the courage and determination needed to be a productive member of the learning communities at their school and in society.

Secondly, be sure to consider your words carefully before speaking to your child about the death of a loved one. For instance, you do not want to tell your child that his/her deceased grandparent is “sleeping” or has “gone on a long vacation” because your child may develop phobias about going to bed at night (because grandma didn’t “wake-up”) or taking a subsequent vacation with your family (because grandma never returned). Instead, it is important to use the correct terminology that their loved one has died and answer only the questions that your child is asking about. To overload your child with extra facets of the death or their future losses is unnecessary and may lead to further confusion, anxiety, and psychological pain for your child.

Thirdly, many children do not fully appreciate the finality of death. They sometimes will feel that the death of a loved one is not forever and that the deceased family member or friend will come back as abruptly as they may have left the child. This may be the reason why your child may continually ask, “When is grandma (who is deceased) coming to see us?” Be sure to use patience and compassion when your child asks these types of questions in the weeks and months after the death has occurred.

Next, you should know that children sometimes feel personally responsible for the death of someone just because their last contact with the deceased may have been an unpleasant one. For instance, if “Johnny” yelled at his mother because she told him to clean-up his room and then later that day, his mother dies of a heart attack, then “Johnny” runs the risk of thinking that he had something to do with his mother’s death. While seeming silly to adults, children may continue to harbor these irrational feelings even if they do not talk with anyone about them.

Fifthly, it is important to encourage children to talk about their experiences of grief and to ask questions that they may have about the death(s). It is also important for you to let them know that you are a safe person for them to vent their feelings to and that you are there to listen and want to help them through this trauma.

Finally, children grieve in different ways; some may have nightmares and/or insomnia, others may have digestive issues and either overeat or stop eating altogether, still others may act out aggressively, some may become excessively clingy, others may become afraid or worried, while others may withdraw into themselves and not say a word. It is important to become aware of your child’s grieving reactions so that you can best reassure them and help them to cope successfully with the death(s) in their own ways.

To sum up:

Keep a positive and reassuring demeanor when addressing your child about death

Be mindful of the words you choose when talking with your child about death

Help your child realize the finality of death

Dispel your child’s feelings of guilt or causation about the death

Encourage your child to talk about their grief

Assist your child to become resilient after their period of mourning

Some activities that you can do to help your child understand more about death and the customary ways that we honor the dead in our society include the following:

Hold a funeral for a family pet including a short eulogy, prayers, burial, and marker so that the child can participate and ask questions about the processes on a smaller scale.

Bring your child to a cemetery and look at the grave stones. You can discuss the length of life of the different people buried there and you may start a discussion on some of the reasons why people die.

Include your child at wakes and/or funerals of family members or friends. This is important so that your child can learn the rituals routinely practiced in these events and so that your child can express his/her own grief about their loss among supportive mentors.

Point out the Obituary column in your local newspaper to your child and have a discussion about the people mentioned there. You can talk about their ages, places they came from, important things they accomplished in their lives, and causes of death, if provided. This activity can help your child know that death is a natural part of the life cycle and occurs more frequently than they may have previously thought.

On Saturday night, Jan. 26th, we will have a full moon in the sky; the fool “Wolf Moon” as it is known in the astronomy field. But even though the front of the moon will be illuminated by the sun, The East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium will be focused on the Dark Side of the Moon; as in Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.”

Back by popular request is our night time laser show. On Jan. 26th join us at the Planetarium for the Music of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” Listen to this classic, from one of the most powerful sound systems in the state, while laser lights dance above your head on our 40 foot diameter dome.

More information and pricing for the EKSC Laser Shows, and other science center attractions, available here.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday

Big Sandy Community & Technical College will be closed Jan. 21st in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.

During the years 1969-1974 society had many great changes. Man landed on the moon, Vietnam War, Woodstock, Beetles broke up, floppy disks invented, VCR was invented, terrorist attack Olympic Games, Sears Tower was built. These things and many more were done while one man from a poverty stricken family reigned as leader of the free world.

We invite you to a day of commemoration in honor of the late President Richard Nixon. January will mark what would be the 100th birthday of Richard Nixon. Nixon who served as President of the United States of America from 1969-1974 is the only President to resign from office amid controversy. In an attempt to recognize the many things that happened in society during this time, Big Sandy Community and Technical College has setup a day of activities covering topics from Watergate to the Civil Rights. The days events will capstone with a concert affectionately named Woodstock in Prestonsburg. Please plan on joining us.

More information, and complete schedule, is available on the event page.

We have all been asked, from time to time, to assist others with their tasks. And, sometimes we are willing and able to help them, while at other times, we do not wish to cooperate with the request. This month’s topic deals with the advantages of volunteering and why it is important to do so when you are able.

Volunteering provides many benefits to everyone. For instance, by helping someone else, you are helping to satisfy some of the needs of the ones you help, you usually feel good about yourself for assisting those less-well-off than yourself, and you serve as an excellent role model for others who may observe or hear about your kindnesses to other people. Furthermore, you can even enhance your future and resume by participating in volunteer activities, as most employers and colleges consider these activities very valuable in developing useful experiences and good character traits in their future employees or students.

When someone asks for your help, or you just simply see a need and fill it without being directly asked, then you are providing an important service to those in need. By helping to fulfill their needs, these people can go on to have a better day and positive moods can be infectious! You will never know the true impact of your kindness and cooperation when you help someone, yet it can be dramatic. For instance, if you help your grandmother by cutting her grass on a sunny afternoon, then that will be one less thing that she will have to worry about. This may help to reduce her blood pressure and give her some extra peace of mind—both things that you may have no idea about. By volunteering to coach a soccer team or to make sandwiches to feed the hungry, you may never know the true impact that your time, resources, and talents have had on the players or those without food, but chances are good that your kindness and compassion will encourage these people to be thankful and to pass it forward to others like themselves, as they are able.

When people help others, it is a satisfying and pleasant feeling to know that you have made a positive difference for someone else. And, feeling good about your deeds can improve your own emotional health. In fact, volunteering is sometimes used as a form of therapy for people suffering from anxiety, mood, and other mental disorders. On a more physical note, providing active assistance to others can release endorphins in our brains which are the ‘feel-good’ chemicals in our bodies. Just like exercise can lift the mood and provide better health and relaxation for those who are active, working for the good of others can result in similar positive effects.

Adults and children who volunteer are good role models for their peers and other bystanders. By watching the things that helpful volunteers do, others can become inspired and, in turn, volunteer their services to others in need. Adults who volunteer also tend to encourage their own children to volunteer, too. This continues the cycle and helps to develop compassion and an active interest in the welfare of others in today’s youth and in society, in general. And, no one can underestimate the importance of these phenomena for the present and future generations to come.

Volunteering to help others can also provide practical experience for those looking for a career or to enhance their chances at being accepted into college. It is never too early to start volunteering and even children and teenagers can help make a positive difference to people in their communities. These collective experiences can be added to your work/volunteer history that you may create for subsequent work and college applications. Volunteering to help others less fortunate illustrates a depth of care and compassion for others which many employers and college admissions boards appreciate.

In order to get started volunteering, you will need a few things:

        1)

Determine a need or interest in your community

        2)

Consult with the people already in charge of that area

        3)

Volunteer your time and talents to improve the need

To find a place to volunteer, just think of local agencies in your community that focus on improving the lives of its residents. For instance, churches, nursing homes, hospitals, schools, food banks, animal shelters, and libraries are just a few of the many places for opportunities that you can investigate to help make a significant difference in the lives of others.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College recently hosted the 3rd Annual Alumni Homecoming on Friday evening, September 21st. The campus was buzzing with great conversation, the excitement of seeing old friends and colleagues, enjoying good food and wonderful entertainment.

Various displays were available for all to enjoy from the Cosmetology Program, the East Kentucky Science Center, Respiratory Care Program and Workforce Solutions. Everyone enjoyed browsing through the memorabilia that included year books, photos and a scrap book from the Mayo Technical College that included newspaper clippings, pictures and other significant historical information.

Nellie Baldwin and daughter, Jeremy Dempsey and Michelle Fields provided the audience with a wonderful selection of music. Comments were made by Mr. Jim Caldwell, WYMT Chief Meteorologist and also from Mr. Keith Caudill, Director of the Mountain Arts Center and a 2010 BSCTC Outstanding Alumnus. Keith commented, “my educational experience at PCC was wonderful, it has truly changed my life forever.” Jim talked briefly about the devastation from the recent tornados and expressed his delight in the fact that the college has worked closely to ensure that the students directly impacted by this devastation have the opportunity to continue their education.

Approximately 150 people were in attendance and seemed to enjoy the evening.
