Narrative:

Big Sandy Community and Technical College's mission statement clearly states the institution's commitment to providing learning experiences for those preparing for immediate entry into the workforce upon graduation, for those transferring to a baccalaureate institution, and for community members seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills.

The ultimate goal is supporting students in successfully achieving their desired educational outcomes. To reach this goal, BSCTC uses several tools to determine and document student achievement and success including: retention [1a] [1b], grade distribution reports [2], course and/or program completion [3], state licensing examination results [4], job placements rates [5a] [5b], and BSCTC transfer data to a four-year institution [6]. In addition, evaluative measures for the Associate in Applied Science programs are reported and incorporated at the state-level through the Technical education Data System (TEDS). BSCTC's program reviews and overall institutional effectiveness are discussed in detail in Core Requirement 2.5 and Comprehensive Requirement 3.3.1, Institutional Effectiveness.

The focus on achievement and success also has led the college faculty and staff to address student engagement in its projected Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The QEP committee chose student engagement for its importance to student learning, collegiate quality and institutional improvement.

In addition, BSCTC has instituted a First Year Experience (FYE) Program focusing upon student retention and intervention. Under the umbrella of the FYE, the GE 100 Introduction [7] to College course acclimates the enrolling student to college life and assigns a mentor to support the student while enrolled. Student Services, faculty and staff are working together to identify students who are at-risk of falling behind and to implement intervention measures to help the student succeed. If the student is unable to continue with coursework, personnel assist the student with early withdrawal so as not to jeopardize future financial aid. This collaborative effort has resulted in the College having had a low financial aid default rate for the past several years. BSCTC financial aid default rate for 2003 [8].
