Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) is committed to recruiting and employing highly qualified faculty members to achieve its mission of providing high quality programs and courses of study in general, developmental, technical, and career education; student development; community and public service; and lifelong learning. Through these programs and courses, the College awards continuing education units, diplomas, certificates, and associate degrees consistent with the comprehensive nature of the institution
[1].
BSCTC has an exhaustive recruiting, selection and hiring process which ensures that all faculty members hired have appropriately documented credentials
[2].
Faculty positions are advertised in local, state-wide and national publications
[3].
Applicants' credentials are checked and rechecked during the hiring process. A group of experienced faculty,
staff and/or administrators will meet to complete a credential check sheet on each candidate prior to bringing the
candidate in for an interview. After the final candidates are chosen, they are invited to interview with the committee.
The committee will meet and prepare a set of appropriate questions to ask each candidate. The Director of Human Resources
will review and approve the set of questions. After all candidates have completed the interview process, the committee
identifies strengths and weaknesses of each candidate. The Director of Human Resources will confirm all information and
inform the President and Provost. After a final review of all documentation, the President selects the candidate for the
position. He then authorizes the Director of Human Resources to offer the position to the candidate. BSCTC abides by all
KCTCS hiring procedures
[4].
A Big Sandy Community and Technical College Nursing Faculty was hired by following procedures for filling vacant positions
[5].
Once a candidate becomes a faculty member at BSCTC, she/he is provided a comprehensive support network to ensure continued growth and competency. Each new faculty member is assigned an experienced mentor. The new BSCTC Air Conditioning Technology Instructor was assigned a mentor from Automotive Technology who has thirteen years of teaching experience and serves on the KCTCS rules committee. BSCTC utilizes the KCTCS Performance, Planning and Evaluation process
[6]
to ensure that continued professional growth is planned, provided and evaluated through five meetings with an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs
[7].
All documentation of this process is kept in confidential files stored in the Provost's office. In addition, BSCTC provides a full complement of professional development opportunities for our faculty
[8].
To ensure continued adherence to high faculty credential standards recognized by SACS, BSCTC monitors faculty qualifications continually through annual reviews of faculty credentials at the start of the academic year performed by the Associate Deans of Academic Affairs. The
[9a]
[9b]
lists the discipline, courses taught, relevant academic degrees and course credit earned, date obtained, and the educational institutions from which faculty obtained their degrees. This documentation along with other documented credentials clearly demonstrates that BSCTC employs qualified faculty members to teach in their respective disciplines. No matter the delivery mode (face-to-face, hybrid, or on-line), BSCTC requires each faculty member to adhere to the same high standards.
