Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) maintains an adequate number of well qualified full-time faculty members
to support the mission of the
institution [1]
and provides adequate faculty resources to ensure the quality and integrity of its academic programs. The credentials of all
faculty for Fall 2006 through
Spring 2007
are described in the faculty rosters, Comprehensive Standard 3.7.1.
Faculty employed by BSCTC are categorized into three groups based upon their responsibilities:
- Regular full time which includes responsibilities relating to full-time teaching, advising, external and
internal service, professional development, and leadership
-
Temporary full time which includes teaching full time, advising, and internal service
- Adjuncts are normally limited to 9 credit hours or less per semester.
During this current Spring 2007 semester BSCTC is offering 702 sections of
academic coursework [2a]
[2b]
(87.6% of classes offered were taught by full-time curriculum faculty and 12.4% were taught by adjuncts and other).
Employed were 137 course instructors-95 regular full-time curriculum faculty instructing 615 sections, 5 full-time temporary
instructors instructing 19 sections, 29 adjunct lecturers instructing 48 sections, 1 full-time staff member instructing
5 sections, 5 faculty currently assigned to non-teaching responsibilities instructing 12 sections and 2 visiting
Chinese scholars instructing 2 sections (78.2% full-time faculty to 21.2% adjunct instructors).
During the Fall 2006 semester BSCTC offered 712 sections of
academic coursework
[3a]
[3b]
( 83.9% of classes offered were taught by full-time curriculum faculty and 16.1% were taught by adjuncts and others).
Employed were 149 course instructors-103 regular full-time curriculum faculty instructed 598 sections, 6 full-time
temporary instructors instructed 34 sections, 31 adjuncts instructed 47 sections, 4 full-time staff members instructed
17 sections, 3 faculty currently assigned to non-teaching responsibilities instructed 12 sections and 2 visiting Chinese
scholars instructed 4 sections (79.2% full-time faculty to 20.8% adjunct instructors).
During the Spring 2006 semester BSCTC offered 718 sections of
academic coursework [4]
(87.9 % were taught by full-time curriculum faculty and 12.1% were taught by adjuncts and others). Employed were 145
course instructors-98 regular full-time curriculum faculty instructed 631 sections, 6 full-time temporary instructors
instructed 22 sections, 35 adjuncts instructed 53 sections, 2 full-time staff members instructed 5 sections, and
4 faculty currently assigned to non-teaching responsibilities instructed 7 sections (75.9% full-time faculty to 24.1%
adjunct instructors).
Each semester BSCTC utilizes full-time faculty and adjuncts to teach Business and Industry Training (BIT) classes offered
through the Community, Workforce, and Economic Development Department. High school faculty are utilized to teach dual
credit courses via agreement specifying guidelines,
credentials, etc. [5].
BSCTC consistently maintains a high ratio of full-time teaching faculty to adjuncts. As demonstrated in the table below,
the percentage of part-time faculty at BSCTC is significantly lower than the percentage of part-time faculty at all
two-year colleges in the United States, all Southern Region Education Board (SREB) states, and the Commonwealth
of Kentucky.

Full-time faculty load is defined by KCTCS Administrative Policies and Procedures (Policies),
2.11 Work Load [7]
and 2.11.1 Work Load for
KCTCS Colleges [8].
Full-time teaching load is defined as fifteen semester credit hours per term (or thirty semester credit hours per academic
year). When determining faculty loads, BSCTC considers courses classified as laboratory and/or clinical that involve
additional contact hours. The maximum number of contact hours per week for a full-time occupational/technical instructor
shall be determined by the chief executive officer but shall not exceed thirty (30). Faculty course load may be altered
based on other assignments such as reassigned time for administrative duties. Associate Deans typically receive fifteen
hours reassigned time per semester for administrative duties. A detailed listing of faculty teaching assignments with
pertinent information for Spring 2007, Fall 2006, and
Spring 2005 is provided
[9]
[10]
[11].
In addition to teaching assignments, faculty also have advising responsibilities. Following is a table listing faculty with
number of advisees assigned.

All full-time faculty participate in an annual performance review. Faculty use the Planning and Performance Evaluation
(PPE) Form to identify goals/expected results for each of the following five areas as applicable: 1) position
responsibilities, 2) internal service, 3) external service, 4) professional development, and 5) leadership. The PPE
document is also used to report accomplishments and plan for
improved performance [12].
Part-time faculty evaluation is an on-going process which includes Student Evaluation of Instruction for each course taught
and assessment of quality and need by the corresponding Associate Dean.
BSCTC follows the process set forth by KCTCS Administrative Policies and Procedures Policies,
2.3 KCTCS Faculty
Search/Appointments/Orientation [13]
which requires the identification and authorization of a vacant position, a description and documentation of the current
essential functions of that position, the advertising and recruitment for that position, when hiring a full and/or part-time
candidate for instruction.
