Narrative:

In current operation, Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) is the product of the Commission's January 2004 consolidation approval of Prestonsburg Community College and Mayo Technical College [1]. Both institutions were in successful continuous operation at the time of the consolidation with Prestonsburg Community College having opened its doors in 1964 and Mayo Technical College being formed in 1938.

The formation of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and the later consolidation of the two institutions, as well as the consolidation of community and technical colleges throughout the state [2], occurred as a result of the General Assembly's passage of the Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997[3], in which the Commonwealth committed to creating an efficient, responsive and coordinated system of autonomous institutions for postsecondary education.

In accordance with KRS 164.580[4] BSCTC awards credentials from sixteen degree programs, forty-six diploma programs, and 171 certificates. A list of degree programs can also be found in the BSCTC Catalog [5] located on our website, as well as the KCTCS website [6]. As illustrated in the tables below, BSCTC tracks headcount in certain program areas. Course schedules [7] and academic calendars [8] are published electronically and available in print upon request.
