The recognition of the Outstanding Alumnae/Alumni is a rich tradition held by Big Sandy Community & Technical College for many years and is one of great prestige and honor. This person(s) have demonstrated a commitment to their community, their profession and the College and must have completed at minimum of 45 hours at Big Sandy Community & Technical College.
Dr. Joey Collins attended Prestonsburg Community College in 1981 before transferring to Auburn University where he graduated with a DVM. He returned to Pike County to establish the East Kentucky Animal Clinic in September 1988. He currently serves as Chair of the Board for Pike County Health Department, Pike County Cooperative Extension, a member of the Pike County Conservation District, a member of the board for Christ Central School, member of Gideon’s International and President of the Board for Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Mr. John A. Herald first became acquainted with the college environment as a student in 1964. He left the college briefly to finish his degree, fulfill his military duties and briefly explore the social work field. John returned permanently in 1971 and has now served the college for forty years. John takes pride in his work and always wants the best for the students and staff at Big Sandy Community and Technical College. He enjoys flying, motorcycles and being with his family.
Ms. Shannon Kay Robinson is a valued member of the dental hygiene profession and has a strong desire to help her patients achieve the best of care. She currently serves as the 1st Vice President of the Kentucky Dental Hygienist Association and participates in organizing student table clinics at the annual KyDHA meeting. In addition, she has volunteered at many Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinics to provide much needed oral health care to individuals who otherwise could not afford it.
Ms. Thursa Sloan is a graduate of the Practical Nursing and the Associate Degree Nursing program. She has continued her education and has now completed a Master’s Degree in Nursing. She has spent her entire career in the health care field and working to create a healthier community. She is a strong advocate for the college and our students and continues to support the educational opportunities in our area.
