SPEAKERS BUREAU SPOTLIGHT: JANE PIXLEY

Jane PixleyJane Pixley, an assistant professor of Psychology, first joined the faculty at Big Sandy Community and Technical College in 2009. Pixley has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Experimental Psychology from Radford University in Radford, Virginia.

Pixley was born in Connecticut but has lived in Virginia since 1992 when she returned to college as a nontraditional student to further her education. An animal lover and learning enthusiast, Pixley enjoys reaching out to the community regarding her favorite topics, which are education and animal intelligence/cognition.

Pixley’s topics on the BSCTC Speakers Bureau website are:

  • Animal Intelligence, introduces the concept of intelligence and discusses what psychology lends to understanding animal intellect, emotions and behavior. The presentation includes a discussion of proper care and treatment of domestic animals and is targeted to children from 10 to 16 years of age.
  • Teaching Our Students to be Independent Learners and Thinkers, explores how we can help our young people to be more motivated to learn, to take initiative in difficult circumstances and to be more creative thinkers. Literally teaching students to learn how to learn and to like it. This presentation is targeted to teachers and parents.
